The Best and Worst Places for Retirees- Colorado Breaks the Top Ten!

While the word “retirement” usually conjures up images of warm and sunny places like Florida, the reality is that retirees are often happiest in places with challenging weather and…fewer retirees. At least that’s part of the story, according to a new report from Bankrate.

Recently, Bankrate.com ranked all 50 states as retirement destinations. They based their picks on such things as weather, cost of living, crime rate, health care quality, tax burden and something called “senior well-being.”

This last one, Bankrate said, is a ranking from the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. It measures how satisfied residents 65 and older are with their surroundings.

When all the scores were tallied, Wyoming emerged as the best state to retire to. Yes, Wyoming—our neighbor to the north was picked above Florida and Hawaii.

Wyoming topped all the other states due to its low cost of living, low crime rate and low tax burden.

Colorado did break the top ten, though, along with Utah, Idaho, Virginia, Iowa, Montana, South Dakota, Arizona and Nebraska.

Arkansas was ranked as the worst state for retirees. The state has a low cost of living, but didn’t do so well in terms of weather, crime, health care, taxes and well-being.

Bankrate’s other “ten worst” states were  New York, Alaska, West Virginia, Louisiana, New Jersey, Hawaii, Kentucky, Missouri and Oregon.

Hot Mobile Tips

Hot mobile tip #1

Add our icon to your iPhone home screen so we're convenient to use when you're on the go! It works like an app! We're working on getting this done for Samsung Galaxies and other Android smartphones.

Step One: On your iPhone, go to www.nococu.org

Step Two: Bookmark the web page. Touch the square button with the arrow in it (from the bottom)

Step Three: Touch the "Add To Home Screen" button with the plus sign on it

Step Four: Touch "Add" in the upper right corner of your screen.

You're Done! Now you can get to our website with just a touch of a button on your iPhone! It gives you mobile access, too, since our site is "responsive" to your devices.

This only works on iPhones for now, but we're looking into making this available on Android-type smartphones too.

Identity Theft

Northern Colorado Credit Union wants you to hold onto your most valuable assets. Your identity and your money are important to you. The most recent data breach through Anthem means it's important to be diligent when it comes to your identity and the security of your money.

Identity theft happens when someone steals your personal information and uses it without your permission. It’s a serious crime that can wreak havoc with your finances, credit history, and reputation—and can take time, money, and patience to resolve.

Recent News about Anthem

FTC Article: Hack Attack: Health insurer’s customer information stolen

Wall Street Journal: Health Insurer Anthem Hit by Hackers

Warning from the BBB

Very good article from SOS -Stickley On Security

Here is some great information from the Federal Trade Commission about Identity Theft: Click Here

Steps you can take to protect yourselves:

  1. Accept credit monitoring services immediately.
  2. Call one of the credit bureaus and put a "Fraud Watch" on your SSN. You only need to call one because by law they are required to contact the other two to ensure they also set up a fraud watch on your behalf. It is free, but only lasts for 90 days, so set a reminder to have it refreshed.
  3. Get a free credit report every 4 months. Each credit bureau is required to provide a free credit report once a year. So stagger each of the three so you can spot any fraud. Visit annualcreditreport.com to get started.
  4. Watch for phishing scams—emails designed to look like they are from Anthem that attempt to get you to click on a link, download a file or enter login credentials. The criminals will attempt to deliver malware that can have a number of different affects. Online banking malware is growing faster than any other, and this helps a criminal gain access to your financial accounts.
  5. Watch for a noticeable increase in credit card offers. If someone attempts to get a credit card in your name, that information is picked up by all the credit card companies and they will send you offers.

NEVER give out sensitive information over the phone or email, especially with calls that you do not initiate yourself. Sensitive items can be your account number, debit card number, or social security number.

You can order a free credit report once every 12 months from each of the three major credit bureaus at www.annualcreditreport.com.

Did you know your NCCU debit card comes with FraudWatch Plus 24-hour protection?

Enroll in home banking and be able to check your account online 24/7.

Report a lost or stolen debit card/credit card.

For your added protection, you can keep transactions private with your online NCCU debit card purchases with MasterCard® Online SecureCode Registration. (What is MasterCard® Securecode?)
All of our credit cards have VISA® Fraud Prevention as well.

NEVER give out sensitive information over the phone or email, especially with calls that you do not initiate yourself. Sensitive items can be your account number, debit card number, or social security number.

There are also phishing scams that try and solicit sensitive information through an email or a website.

If you ever feel unsure, contact us directly and speak with someone personally about your account. We're happy to take the extra time to assure you your accounts are safe with us.
